FMI: The weather is unusually hot, but some relief may come over the weekend | Yle News

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has warned of unusually hot weather for the rest of the week.

As of Tuesday morning, the temperature had breached the 25C “heat wave” mark, with temperatures expected to rise to nearly 30C throughout the day, as far north as central Finland.

Due to the high daytime temperatures, forecasters believe that the average daily temperature may not fall below 20 degrees Celsius. A strong, slow-moving front will keep nighttime temperatures warm in southern and central Finland, with morning temperatures dropping to 15 degrees Celsius.

"There’s nothing on the horizon to cool the air," Laura Tomolageneral meteorologist.

The number of hot days in May will hit an all-time high, and the average temperature for the entire month of May may also break the record.

As for weather conditions, there are currently only isolated showers and thunderstorms. The rainfall is also unusual for May. For example, less than 1 mm of rain fell at Kaisaniemi station in Helsinki, while normally only a few centimetres are recorded.

Tuomola said the weather will become more unsettled this weekend, with rain or thunderstorms likely to become more common. It will still be warm, but may be slightly cooler starting the weekend than before.
