The number of members of Parliament, Councils and bodies established under various laws will be reduced to reduce state spending, said Mohamed Muizou.
Speaking at a rally of the PNC Harge. He said: “In a village with a small population, where only one person is elected as the head of state to decide state affairs, the cost of electing a large number of members is expensive.” Therefore, the size of parliament should be reduced and in cases of small population, electing the chairman and vice chairman of parliament will be enough, he said. It would be better to elect more members in densely populated villages and cities, he said.
The President called the current provincial council elections meaningless and said he would propose amendments to the law to change the way provincial councils are constituted to make them smaller and more effective for the benefit of the people.
He said the best approach would be to reduce the number of MPs to 77, as was done in the 17th National Assembly. This, he said, would reduce parliament’s expenses.
“Such constitutional and legal amendments can save hundreds of crores of rupees from the people’s money. A lot of things can be done in favor of the people with this money. The government can improve the lives of the people in many ways,” he said.
He said the number of members of the Council and Parliament and the various committees was unusually large, and that not many members were needed to sincerely serve the people. Therefore, he would propose amending the law to reduce the number of committee members.
Furthermore, the President said that the various commissions will be merged, their working will be transformed for the benefit of the people and their capacity to produce results will be enhanced. This will shape the system in a way that benefits the people, said Mohamed Muizhui.
