“I made my choice then and there, and I’ll do it over and over again, no problem.”
Max’s parents also encouraged him to talk to others about National Service (NS), an integral part of Singapore citizenship, even as he was still a pre-teen.
He said he now sees it as a small help to the country while also growing from it.
“It can push you, it can help you, it can give you a new perspective, whatever it is,” Max said. “I think I’m going to enjoy it, at least from what I’ve heard.”
He added that when he spoke to members of the Singapore Youth Sailing Team about national service, they joked that he would become a “wayang king” – a Singlish term for someone who is good at performing.
Max was supposed to join the army in September. But on Saturday, the Ministry of Defence of Singapore Announce He was granted an extension until August 2028 to allow him to train and participate in the Los Angeles Olympics that year.
The ministry noted that “deferments may be granted to outstanding athletes who are assessed to have the potential for Singapore to win medals in top international events such as the Olympics”.
