Leader of Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Saturday to meet Congress workers who were arrested by police after a clash with BJP workers earlier this week.
Mr. Gandhi will also meet the families of the victims of recent tragedies in the state, including the Rajkot game area fire, Vadodara boat capsizing and Morbi bridge collapse.
This is Mr. Gandhi’s first visit to the state after the Lok Sabha elections.

His visit comes in the wake of a clash between BJP and Congress workers outside the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) office on July 2 over Modi’s remarks in the Lok Sabha that “BJP and Modi do not represent the entire Hindu community” and that “Hindus are never violent”.
The clash came after Bajrang Dal workers vandalised Congress offices.
After the conflict, both sides reported the incident to the police, resulting in the arrest of five Congress workers.
Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil told reporters on Friday that Mr Gandhi would also meet the families of the five arrested Congress workers.
“Rahul Gandhi will reach the GPCC office around 12:30 pm. During his visit, he will meet party workers and address them. He will also meet the families of the victims who lost their lives in the recent tragedy in the state,” said a state Congress leader.
On July 2, members of the BJP Youth Wing came to the Rajiv Gandhi Palace in the city’s Paldi area to protest against Mr. Gandhi’s remarks in the Lok Sabha, following which clashes broke out between members of the Congress and the BJP outside the Rajiv Gandhi Palace.
According to police, both sides started pelting stones, injuring five policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police.
A day after the clash, on July 3, the Ellisbridge police registered two FIR cases and arrested five Congress workers.
On Thursday, police registered another case involving several BJP party members after Gohil accused the police of favouring one side.
