The positive balance of the workforce (data from the IT, Technology, Data and Statistics Office of the Republic of San Marino) in April 2024 compared to April 2023 is almost entirely due to the number of employees, which increased by about 650 people in the twelve months. In addition, we also found an increase in the number of companies active in the region, by almost 100 (4 manufacturing companies).

Employment

Specifically, as mentioned above, the Dashboard highlights the growth of the labor force (employed + self-employed + unemployed), from a total of 24,020 in April 2023 to 24,689 in April 2024. As mentioned above, the growth was driven by the increase in the number of employees, from 21,801 in April 2023 to 22,454 12 months later. However, the number of self-employed people remained the same (still 1,559), while the number of unemployed people increased slightly (to 660, compared to 676 in the last survey). If we focus on the “strictly employed”, the number is even smaller: 362 at the end of April 2023 and 379 at the end of April 2024.

Private Sector

Let’s expand on what was mentioned at the beginning with the available figures. The number of companies in each branch of economic activity increased from a total of 5,139 (April 2023) to 5,238 (April 2024). Manufacturing showed signs of growth (from 484 to 488), as did accommodation and food service activities (from 115 to 120), real estate activities (from 301 to 343), financial and insurance activities (from 90 to 106), and professional, scientific and technical activities (from 1.047 to 1.077).

Private employees earn about + 500. Reflecting the data for April 2023 and April of this year, we see that the total increased from 17,939 to 18,486. Zooming in on the various “sectors”, we can see that there was a slight contraction in the manufacturing sector (from 7,146 to 7,093 units), as well as a small contraction in financial and insurance activities (from 665 to 652), while employment in the construction sector increased (from 931 to 955), despite a decrease in the number of companies, from 379 to 355).

In April 2024, the number of cross-border workers continued to grow both in the previous month and in April 2023: 7,451 in the fourth month of last year, 80.15 in March 2024, and 8,128 in April 2024.

Public Sector

The number of employees in the extended public sector by agency increased by more than 100 units in 12 months, from 3,862 in April 2023 to 3,968 in April 2024. It was 3,901 in March 2024. Specifically, the number of PAs increased from 2,171 to 2,231.
