An opinion poll on Thursday showed the RN had secured a historic victory, winning the first round of elections, but they fell short of an outright majority in the runoff on Sunday.
Two weeks ago, on the eve of France’s opening match at Euro 2024, Mbappe found himself at the centre of his country’s political upheaval, describing the events at home as a pivotal moment in the country’s history.
“This is an unprecedented event. I therefore want to engage in dialogue with all the French people, including young people,” he said at the time.
“We are the generation that can make a difference. We see extremists knocking on the door of power, and we have the opportunity to shape the future of our country.”
Striker Marcus Thuram also called on people to “fight every day” to stop the RN gaining power, while winger Ousmane Dembele said “alarm bells have been rung” and called on people to mobilise to vote, as did his team-mate Olivier Giroud.
Coach Didier Deschamps said he respected his players’ right to express their political views.
“It’s their free will,” he said. “We have to realise that they are great players and French citizens and they are not immune or indifferent to the situation in France.”
