The U.S. state of Arizona filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, accusing Google of deceptive practices in its location tracking and data collection.
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich said the lawsuit stemmed from an investigation two years ago after media reports that Google had ways to know where users were even if they chose not to share their location information with Google.
“While Google users were misled into opting out of location tracking, the company used other avenues to violate individuals’ privacy,” Brnovich said in a press release.
“It’s almost impossible to stop Google from tracking your movements without your knowledge or consent.”
The lawsuit alleges that Google violated Arizona’s racketeering laws and requires the company to hand over money it earned from its activities in the state.

Google spokesman Jose Castaneda responded AFP ask.
“We have always built privacy features into our products and provided strong controls for location data.”
He added that Google looked forward to “setting the record straight.”
The lawsuit said that while Google offers users the option to opt out of sharing location information when using its services or smartphones running Google’s Android software, it can collect users’ location information from apps or online activities to target ads.
