The music industry report commissioned by ProArt reports on a moment in media history: According to a study by the Hétfa Institute and Analysis Centre, this year for the first time, more people listened to music on YouTube than on the radio. Especially among young people aged 18-29, the rise of online music is striking: 80% of young people already listen to music online.

A representative survey of the Hungarian population showed that twice as many people chose domestic music over foreign and Hungarian performers. Half of the respondents said that the main point was that “the music should be good” – regardless of its “nationality”.

Last year, 62% of the population attended concerts, which is twice as much as the results of the study in 2013. The survey not only covers concerts in the traditional sense, as country days and food festivals also play an important role in the live music consumption of the Hungarian population, but live music heard in bars and theaters is also included in the results.

In the competition between radio stations and YouTube (or other similar streaming services), the latter wins overall, but the situation varies by age group. It is not surprising that streaming is favored by young people: more than three quarters of 18-29 year olds choose this way of listening to music online, while only 38% of 50-60 year olds do so. 84% of the latter mainly listen to music on the radio.

Meanwhile, each age group listens to music stored on mobile phones, CDs and other data media at similar rates: 46% of 18-29 year olds, half of 30-49 year olds and 58% of older adults do so.
