Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has appointed Lorraine Bennis Roberts as the country’s ambassador to the United Nations. This follows the appointment of Vince Henderson, the previous UN ambassador, as ambassador to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS). Hubert Charles, formerly the Dominican ambassador to Washington, recently retired from public service. Bennis Roberts was the official liaison officer for the Dominican diaspora in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Convent High School graduate won the 2000 election as a member of the United Workers Party (UWP) before switching to the Dominican Labour Party (DLP).
She was a cabinet minister for several years before resigning from politics and moving to the U.S. Virgin Islands. She is expected to present her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the coming days.
