Zika virus infection during pregnancy may cause microcephaly (a significantly smaller head due to abnormal brain development) in the fetus

Six cases of Zika virus infection have been reported in Pune city, health officials said on Monday.

According to them, the patients included two pregnant women.

“A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane district has been diagnosed with Zika virus. She tested positive on Friday. On Monday, another pregnant woman who was 12 weeks pregnant was diagnosed with the virus. Both the pregnant women are in good condition and have no symptoms,” an official said.

Zika virus infection in pregnant women may cause their fetuses to have microcephaly (a significantly smaller head due to abnormal brain development).

“The first case of Zika infection was from Erandwane, where a 46-year-old doctor tested positive. Later, the sample of his 15-year-old daughter also tested positive. The other two cases were from Mundwa, a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man,” the official said.

Zika virus disease is spread through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which also transmit diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. The virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947.

“The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation is carrying out surveillance. As a precautionary measure, they are taking measures like fogging and fumigation to curb the breeding of mosquitoes,” he added.
