According to Israeli statistics, the war broke out on October 7 when Hamas-led militants broke into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages, including civilians and soldiers, back to Gaza.

Israel’s air, ground and sea counteroffensive has so far killed nearly 38,000 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, and reduced the densely populated coastal enclave to ruins.

Gaza’s health ministry does not distinguish between combatants and noncombatants, but officials say most of the dead are civilians. Israel has lost 316 troops in Gaza and says at least a third of the Palestinian dead are combatants.

Ceasefire efforts stalled

Efforts by Arab mediators, backed by the United States, to secure a ceasefire have stalled. Hamas says any deal must end the war and allow Israel to fully withdraw from Gaza. Israel says it will accept only a temporary ceasefire until Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, is eliminated.

Palestinian border officials say Israeli authorities have released 54 Palestinians detained during the war.

Among them was Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, director of Al Shifa Hospital, who was arrested during the military’s first raid on the medical facility in November.
