KE PASOK: Overall context of October election decision

Nikos Androulakis announced at the Central Committee of the party that elections for the leadership of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement will be held from October 6 to 13emphasizing that he will run for re-election.

“I will not be a hostage to those inside and outside the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, we will provide the right and clear solution,” the PASOK president stressed. Instead of announcing a meeting, he announced the creation of a new “central committee that will determine the details and the televised debates between the candidates.”

In his speech, Andruleakis launched a stinging attack on economic interests and stressed that he would not allow the leadership election to become a “catwalk show”.

In response to what was happening in the “Athens Triangle,” as he put it, he shut down any discussion of a merger between PASOK and SYRIZA.

“I received the party from the Fufi source Nimata. It will not be part of anyone’s game”, he characteristically added: “High-level welding and negotiations with individuals for the sake of political survival will bankrupt the faction morally and politically”.

He even left a sting for the media, saying that “four months before the elections, they ‘blackmailed’ us, and now they are taking the lead in the internal affairs of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement.”

It should be stressed that the composition of the Bureau was negotiated before the meeting, and it was a high-profile one. Doukas objected, and a middle solution was eventually found, with a senior executive from Doukas and a dummy from EDEKAP being added to the Board.

He acknowledged his mistakes but could not explain why Panhellenic Socialism failed to become a strong official opposition force during his time.
Referring generally and vaguely to the interests that PAS is allegedly fighting for and their own, he characteristically said: “Various scenarios are circulating on the proverbial table… about the liquidation of PAS and a merger with SYRIZA. It depends on what PASOK, the strategic ally of the NLD a few years ago, wants. I have news for you, the executives of this backstage… I grew up with a party, starting with the late Motomata, that will not allow to be part of anyone’s game,” he said forcefully.

PASOK officials who were not members of the Central Committee also gathered at the Caravelle Hotel. This was a legal provision that allowed the participation of secretaries of prefectural councils, as well as representatives of social partners, the productive classes, self-government and special social groups.

However, Andrew Luckey’s challenger spoke of a “splash” designed to demonstrate power, he applauded during his speech and the atmosphere of the meeting was…tense. Harris Ducas, on the other hand, submitted his candidacy to avoid leaving a mark on party issues. As he always says, we are not looking for a Messiah, but someone who can defeat New Democracy and not Syriza. In essence, the Athens mayor stressed that the main enemy is the New Democracy government.

“We must coordinate, unite and fight the battle to restart and revive the Panhellenic Socialist Movement. Not to win Katselakis, but to defeat ND in the next national elections.”Pavlos Gerolanos also announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Panhellenic Socialist Movementconfirm all the information in recent days.

Mr Gerolanos spoke of a “triple responsibility”: a social program, a party that listens to society and unites its views.

As Mr Andruakis announced three weeks before the party proceedings, the nominations will be formally submitted to a special central committee that meets for this purpose.
