The National Meteorological Agency said seismic recorders in Hanimaadhoo recorded the impact of the earthquake.
The Maldives Meteorological Authority, the national weather service, said the earthquake was reported in several villages in the province this evening.
As a result, a seismograph installed in Hanimadu recorded the tremor, the Met Office said.
The Met Office said the quake was recorded at 8.27pm local time.
However, the Met Office said it was not expected to pose a threat to Sri Lanka.
Some villages in the north were also hit by earthquakes in 2019. The Met Office said an earthquake was recorded by seismometers in Hanimadu. The earthquake posed no danger.
