Apia, Samoa – June 19, 2024 – Opposition MP Lea’ana Ronnie Posini must provide evidence in the allegations against Agriculture Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao within 48 hours.
The order was made after the Speaker confirmed the following words in the parliamentary record: “So you have to hide Behind these people” Sent by Leaana to the Minister.
The MP, in response to Laoli, said some overseas Samoan media had accused the Samoan judiciary of corruption and Laoli was behind the accusation against the minister.
The MP went on to say that cabinet ministers similarly disparage the prime minister, the speaker, the police department, while the cabinet disparages itself.
“The Cabinet will destroy the Cabinet again,” Leana said.
Later, Raouli speaks up and reminds Lyanna that such words and accusations only create tension.
He also reminded Leaana of freedom of speech and that he had the legal right to take action if it affected his feelings.
Laauli also asked Leaana to provide evidence to prove what he said: “A carpenter always spoils a carpenter.” but Leaana accuses Laauli of misinterpreting his meaning.
Leana then said,Now you have to hide behind these people” It is hinted that Raoli is the mastermind behind this.
Health Minister Walasi Tafeto Togamana intervened and said the MP’s speech would only create division.
“The ban on your speech was just to provoke, but it doesn’t matter.”,” said Valasi.
On the issue of disparaging the judiciary and accusing it of corruption, Valasi said when the FAST government tried to replace her as the current government, HRPP criticised and accused the judiciary of corruption.
Valasi then filed a motion for Leanna to provide evidence to prove his allegations against Raouli.
The Speaker did not raise a question on the motion, but instead called for a morning recess so that the Parliamentary Secretary could review the Parliamentary Record to find the specific remarks made by Leanna.
After the break, the Speaker confirmed the remarks and raised a question which was supported.
Leaana has until Friday to give evidence on the charges against Laauli and it will be up to the council to decide whether to give evidence.
