The leadership of the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has expressed appreciation to His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, for his outstanding leadership in overcoming the distortions, accusations and mistrust of some in the wake of the tragic death of the late Dr. Saulos Claus Chilima and eight others in a plane crash on June 10, 2024 in Chikangawa forest, Mzimba Province.

When an EAM delegation visited Kamuzu Palace on Tuesday to condole President Chakwera, EAM Vice Chairman Dr Maggie Madimbo commended the President for his resilience and patience in handling the crisis.

Madimbo noted that the EAM noted that President Chakwera had extended personal support to all project activities related to the late Vice President and other victims of the air crash.

“You have demonstrated fatherly qualities that the nation desperately needs at this difficult and emotional time. This is highly commendable and a valuable testimony as a Christian,” Madimbo added. “We commend you, Your Excellency, for your proactive call for an independent investigation into this air disaster. Such a report will go a long way in dispelling the misunderstanding and mistrust that currently prevails.”

The Vice President also thanked the people of Malawians for maintaining peace and calm during this period despite the social media being flooded with comments glorifying anarchy from some disaffected elements.

She explained that the disaster has exposed how polarized our country is along tribal and partisan lines, and her organization will be proactive in churches and communities across the country to reach out to people to unite and live in peace.

“As Malawians, we need to constantly remind ourselves to love our country and be proud of our Malawian identity. Sometimes, comments from some of us tend to be negative and uninspiring,” she said.

Madimbo assured the President that the EAM would continue to provide him with advisory services as necessary as a lead on all governance and conduct matters.

President Chakwera in his speech told the delegation that the death of the late Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others was tragic for him and the people of Malawia.

Chakwera assured them that the government had agreed to allow German experts to conduct a thorough investigation so that the public would know the truth about the accident.
