The Barcelona prosecutor’s office has filed a case against a woman after she shared a video on Twitter showing an alleged immigrant minor attacking a teacher. However, the scene seen in the image actually took place in Brazil, not Spain. The Barcelona hate crime prosecutor has now charged the woman, a resident of Sant Joan de Spez, with “destruction of the dignity of people due to discrimination related to nationality or ethnic origin”.
On June 13, 2019, RMMC posted a message on Twitter with a video attached. “I am sending you a video of an educational center for underage immigrants (sic) who entered Spain illegally. I ask you to spread it so that Spain knows once and for all how grateful they are to us for welcoming them.” In the image, a group of students in a classroom can be seen yelling at the teacher, throwing papers, overturning tables and chairs, and laughing at the teacher.
“I beg you to spread this around and let Spain know how grateful they are to have welcomed them,” he wrote.
The video has caused a lot of reactions on Twitter. In that message and many others, it is always said that the scene was committed by “menas” (underage immigrants). Granada has also been pointed out as the possible location of the incidents. Several media have clarified that the events actually took place in a school in São Paulo. Prosecutor Miguel Ángel Aguilar added that “the police investigation has confirmed” that the events really took place in Brazil, so “they have nothing to do with minors who immigrated (sic) to Spain.”
The prosecutor accuses the woman of trying, through a “shocking” message, to “link alleged violence in the classroom to unaccompanied minors who come to Spain”. He insists that his aim is nothing less than “discrediting them, associating them with uncivilized, violent behavior and lack of respect for the teacher’s authority”. The spread of the false video contributes to “awakening or increasing prejudices and stereotypes against a “particularly vulnerable” group, thus carrying the risk of “generating a sense of exclusion and social hostility towards them”.

The investigation began with a complaint from the Barcelona Ombudsman. The Mossos identified several people who circulated the video in Cuenca, León, Granada and Madrid. The Barcelona prosecutor has sent colleagues from these provinces to investigate the facts. The woman has taken advantage of her right not to testify and now faces charges of a crime against fundamental rights.
