Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso said he was ready for a big night after his side’s double win on Saturday, telling reporters: “I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.”
Asked if he would celebrate with his players in the German capital before the club returns to Leverkusen for a parade on Sunday, Alonso replied “of course”.
“We need to enjoy the game. We need to release the tension from the whole season.
“I’m not going to work tomorrow.”
Leverkusen won the Bundesliga title unbeaten – the club’s first league title – and lifted the German Cup on Saturday when Granit Xhaka scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Kaiserslautern. Alonso’s first full season in charge of the top flight ended with a Bundesliga and German Cup double, a Europa League final and just one defeat in 53 games. Leverkusen’s only defeat came in the Europa League final against Serie A side Atalanta on Wednesday, but Alonso’s side bounced back in dogged fashion. “I need more time to grasp it. It’s been a fantastic season. It’s great to be here to celebrate – we need to enjoy it,” Alonso told Germany’s ARD TV network.
