London: A massive power outage on Sunday (June 23) caused “significant” flight delays or cancellations at Britain’s third-busiest airport, the airport operator said.
Manchester Airport Group, which operates both London Stansted and East Midlands, said Manchester Airport was “affected by a large-scale power outage in the region this morning”.
“This has caused widespread confusion,” the group said on social media.
Power has now been restored at the international airport in northern England, but as flights have been cancelled, passengers scheduled to depart from Terminals 1 and 2 have been told “not to come to the airport until further notice”.
The airport told passengers at Terminal 3 they could arrive as normal but warned they “may be affected by delays”.
Some passengers described “chaos” on X (formerly Twitter), with one saying “luggage was thrown onto the conveyor belt” and another saying they were “trapped on the plane”.
EasyJet, which operates flights from Terminal 1, warned that security lines were “extremely long” and baggage checks were affected, meaning passengers could only take carry-on luggage on board.
The UK tourism industry has suffered a series of shocks in the past few years, including technical problems and industrial action affecting rail and air passengers.
Last month, a glitch at immigration electronic gates across the country caused long delays for thousands of passengers.
Last August, the country suffered its worst air traffic control disruption in nearly a decade due to a technical glitch.
