The United States and Vietnam discussed ways to advance their strategic partnership at a meeting following Putin’s visit to Vietnam this week, Bloomberg reported, citing a Vietnamese government statement.
The report said that Daniel Kritenbrink, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on June 21.
The US diplomat’s visit to Vietnam comes after Putin’s visit was criticized by the United States.
“The United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting a strong and prosperous Vietnam,” the Southeast Asian country’s government said in a statement.
Bloomberg noted that Kritenbrink also confirmed that the United States welcomes and appreciates Vietnam’s growing role in multilateral and regional forums.
The US diplomat told a separate press conference that trust between the two countries “has never been as strong and deep as it is now,” Vietnamese portal Dan Tri reported.
Earlier, the US State Department said Kritenbrink “will emphasize the United States’ strong commitment to implementing the U.S.-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership” during his visit to Hanoi.
In September, the United States and Vietnam upgraded their bilateral relations to the highest level of comprehensive strategic partnership.
