Monaco: The Formula One Monaco Grand Prix was suspended on Sunday after a first-lap collision between Sergio Perez’s Red Bull and the cars of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg of the following Haas.
As the cars behind accelerated uphill towards Casino Square, Perez appeared to be caught up by Magnussen, the Mexican driver crashing into the guardrail, while Hulkenberg was also caught in the chaos.
The Haas car was disqualified from qualifying due to a damaged rear wing and therefore started from the last row of the grid.
All three drivers climbed out of their cars unharmed, red flags waved and carbon fiber fragments were scattered across the track.
Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon also had a wheel-to-wheel collision with Poitier as they battled for position, with Ocon’s car being thrown into the air.
“What did he do? Why did he attack me?” Gasly exclaimed. “Now the whole car is broken.”
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari led from pole position, with Oscar Piastri of McLaren second. All cars returned to the pits and restarted in their original order.
That’s good news for Ferrari, which had seen Carlos Sainz get out of the car at Cassino before the collision and after the incident with Piastri.
The Spaniard, who started from third on the grid, recovered successfully and returned to the pits.
