On Thursday evening, a major police operation in Wiener Brigittenau resulted in the death of a 39-year-old armed man. According to the autopsy, the man was shot to death by a police weapon. The suspect had previously threatened the police several times with a replica of an AK47 that could shoot.

The police then ran to the third floor of the apartment building, where the man’s apartment was located. The police tried to make contact with the suspect. Then he suddenly opened the door and threatened him with a long gun for the first time. At this time, the emergency services fired the first shot “because the situation at the scene seemed to endanger the lives of the police officers,” the police explained. This shot most likely missed the suspect. The man retreated into the apartment.
He then likely spotted officers in the inner courtyard, where they were stationed to provide exterior security, police spokesman Schuster said. The gunman again aimed at officers — this time from a balcony — who fired in his direction because they posed a danger to uninvolved passersby. At least one of the shots likely struck the man. He dragged himself into the apartment, badly wounded. Police then rushed into the apartment and found the suspect dead. Ultimately, emergency doctors were able to confirm his death. The motive is completely unclear.
