On Wednesday 22nd May, therapists from across a range of areas of Manx Care came together at Keyll Darree for the inaugural ‘Celebrating Therapeutic Success’ event and for the first time a very special in-house award was presented.
The event, held for the first time, provided an opportunity for all the Therapy Department teams, as well as the Interim Heads of Therapy Department (Kelly Gulland and Frances Butler), to present highlights from the past year, celebrate achievements, share areas of progress and future plans.
During the event, each team in the Therapeutics Department gave a five-minute presentation on their top three achievements over the past year and their plans for the next year. These presentations were very well received by all present, which was almost the entire Therapeutics Department staff, and there was a lot of positive feedback after the event. All colleagues who received national recognition and awards throughout the financial year were recognized and celebrated.
The Phill Quayle Award for Excellence in Therapeutic Services was established following the death in 2022 of a much-loved colleague and professional physiotherapist.
Team leaders were asked to nominate colleagues who they felt had excelled at their work in a range of areas including clinical excellence, innovation, research, mentoring, exceeding expectations, modelling Manx nursing values and leadership, and to explain why, with the winners chosen after a panel of judges from outside the treatment department considered the candidates.
This year seven colleagues were nominated for the award:
- Janelle Tandan (Professional Respiratory Therapist)
- Rosie Reay (Children’s Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist)
- Claire Ellis (Lead First Contact Physiotherapist)
- Anna Elvin (Professional Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapist)
- Judy Bullough (Enhanced Range Physiotherapist, Orthopaedics)
- Rosie Callow (Community Adult Specialist Physiotherapist)
- Lizzy Power (Specialist Occupational Therapist, Community Adults)
Going forward, the award will be presented at the annual Celebrating Therapeutic Success event to a clinician from the Isle of Man Nursing Therapy Service, namely a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, dietitian, podiatrist and orthotic/prosthetist.
All nominees received a certificate and the winner will receive an engraved shield and book voucher for one year. This year, the award was won by Anna Elvin, a specialist cardiopulmonary physiotherapist, who was described in her nomination as “a great leader and mentor, and one of the most patient professionals I have ever worked with”. Therapies was delighted to welcome Phill’s family to the awards ceremony, and refreshments were provided after the event.
Winner Anna Elvin commented:
“I am absolutely thrilled to receive this award and really didn’t expect it. I am grateful to those who nominated me for taking the time to nominate me and for deeming me worthy of this award. I am extremely honoured to receive this award in Phil’s name as he was an inspiration to so many of us as a physiotherapist and colleague. If I can show half of his dedication to the job and the people I worked with then I will be extremely satisfied as he was one of the best physiotherapists I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He will be greatly missed. I would also like to thank Phil’s parents for their support of this award – I will always treasure it.”
