DÜSSELDORF, Germany: Switzerland player Fabian Schar suffered a broken nose during their 1-1 draw with Scotland at Euro 2024 on Wednesday, compounding an already difficult night after he inadvertently assisted an opponent’s goal before the game.
Nineteen minutes into the match, Schar collided with Scotland’s Anthony Ralston, and both players required medical attention but continued to play in what was a spirited match in Cologne.
The clash came six minutes after Schar’s incident, which had given Scotland the lead in a match that Switzerland had been expected to win and qualify for the next round with one game to spare.
Swiss goalkeeper Jan Sommer was preparing to easily collect Scott McTominay’s shot when Schar suddenly intervened and slammed the ball into the net with difficulty. It was initially recorded as an own goal but was later awarded to McTominay.
“My nose was broken,” Schar told Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport. “As we expected, there were a lot of tackles and fights. They made it very difficult for us.”
Switzerland equalised with a brilliant goal from Shaqiri in the 26th minute and had many chances to take the lead, but were thwarted time and again by the tenacious Scots, who have failed in their last 11 attempts as they fight for a chance to reach the knockout stages of a major tournament.
Schar has endured many hardships, breaking his nose in 2018 and suffering concussions in 2019, 2022 and 2023, two of which came while he was playing for English side Newcastle United.
“I’ll feel it more tomorrow,” he said of his latest injury. “It’s a tough game for everybody. It fuels my enthusiasm a little bit. That’s part of it. It’s fun to play as well.”
France’s Kylian Mbappe also suffered a broken nose after playing in his first Euro 2024 game, so he will wear a mask in the next games.
Switzerland did not immediately respond on Thursday to questions about Schar’s injury and whether he would play in Sunday’s final and decisive Group A match against host Germany.
