A United Nations delegation led by Abdoulaye Mar Dieye and Jacob El-Shiloh concluded the first phase of a high-level mission to the central Sahel region with a visit to Niger from 9 to 13 June. The mission aimed to restore relations, in line with Niger’s national priorities, and promote the integration of humanitarian, sustainable development and peace operations.
Mr. Mar Diye affirmed the United Nations commitment to supporting Niger in redefining its future and stressed the importance of building projects in irrigation, security, food and energy sovereignty by 2026. Prime Minister Lamine Zaina insisted on the urgency of achieving concrete impacts, focusing on youth, education, climate change and water management.
The delegation met with several ministers to discuss national priorities and humanitarian costs. Jacob El-Shiloh reiterated the UN’s desire to align its actions to better align with the priorities of the Nigerien government. In addition, UNDP will invest $9 million to improve access to sustainable energy in Niger.
The delegation, which includes regional directors from across sectors, will continue to Mali and Burkina Faso to strengthen cooperation and support sustainable development in the Sahel region.
