Kathmandu, June 5 – South Africa defeated the United States by 18 runs in the first Super-8 match of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Chasing a target of 195 runs, the United States scored 176 runs in 20 overs, losing 6 wickets. American Andris Gauss top-scored with 80 runs in 47 balls with 5 fours and 5 sixes. Gauss had previously represented South Africa in U-19 cricket.
Harmeet Singh scored 38 runs off 22 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes. Steven Taylor scored 24 runs, Nitesh Kumar 8 runs and Corey Anderson was dismissed with 12 runs.
Hamit and Goss scored 91 runs for the sixth wicket of the US team, reaching 76 (5) in 11.1 overs, with the US needing 28 runs from the last 12 balls to win. Big Hamit Singh was caught by Stubbs at mid-on and his shot was the turning point of the match.
Kagiso Rabada of South Africa took 3 wickets, while Keshav Maharaj, Enrich Norkia and Tabrez Shamsi took 1 wicket each.
Earlier, South Africa lost the toss and was invited to bat first at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Bay. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock scored 74 runs in 40 balls with seven fours and five sixes.
Captain Aiden McCram was dismissed for 46 off 32 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six. South Africa were 16-1 in 2.4 overs when opener Riza Hendricks was caught in the middle with a top corner. For the second wicket, Deakko and Maklaram put on a 110-run century partnership to lay the foundation for the huge total.
De Kock was caught by Shayan Jazinger off a full ball from spinner Harmeet Singh. Soon after, David Miller was dismissed and out for zero. Henrik Klaasen scored 36 runs off 22 balls, including 3 sixes, and was not out. Tristan Stubbs scored 20 runs off 16 balls, including 2 fours, and was not out. American Harmeet Singh took 2 wickets after scoring 24 runs in 4 overs.
Saurabh Netrawalkar took 2 wickets in 4 overs and scored 21 points. South Africa remained unbeaten in 4 matches in Group D and advanced to the quarterfinals. The United States won 2, drew 1 and lost 1 in 4 matches, and ranked second in Group A with 5 points, advancing to the super quarterfinals.
