Boeing boss Dave Calhoun admitted before a US Senate investigative committee on Tuesday that the situation within the group on production quality and safety was “serious”. He promised that progress had been made.

“Our culture is far from perfect, but we are taking steps and we are making progress,” he said. “We understand the severity of this, and we are committed to moving forward with transparency and accountability while increasing investments in our people.”

Calhoun was responding to lawmakers about the problems the planemaker has faced since a panel on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max jet exploded during a flight over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in January.
