DUSSELDORF, Germany: France captain Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose late in the match as the French football federation beat Austria 1-0 at Euro 2024 on Monday.
The 25-year-old, one of the tournament’s most celebrated players, was injured when he collided with the shoulder of Austrian defender Kevin Danso during a challenge for a header.
He was substituted at the end of the game and left the stadium in an ambulance to undergo an X-ray.
“Kylian Mbappé suffered a broken nose during the second half of Austria’s match against France in Düsseldorf this Monday,” the federation said in a statement.
“The French captain was first treated by medical staff and doctor Frank Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a broken nose. During a radiological examination at the Düsseldorf hospital, the diagnosis was confirmed.
“Mbappe has returned to the French team camp. He will receive treatment in the coming days but will not undergo surgery immediately.”
France will face the Netherlands on Friday and Mbappe is doubtful for the game – a huge blow for the French team.
The French Football Federation said: “We will produce a mask so that France’s number 10 can consider returning to play after a period of treatment.”
