SEOUL: South Korea’s military said on Friday (May 24) it had detected signs that North Korea may be preparing to launch a satellite, which would be the nuclear-armed North’s effort to put a second military reconnaissance craft into orbit.
South Korean military officials said South Korean and U.S. BroadCast Unitedligence agencies are closely monitoring North Korea’s activities.
The official said the activities were discovered in Dongchang-ri in northwestern North Korea, where the country’s main space center is located, but did not elaborate.
North Korea launched its first spy satellite last year and claims leader Kim Jong Un has viewed photos of the White House, the Pentagon and other parts of the world. However, state media has yet to release any photos taken by the satellite.
The launches have prompted sanctions from the United States and its allies and prompted Seoul to suspend parts of a 2018 military agreement with Pyongyang.
