The Republic of San Marino also participated in the First Ukrainian Peace Summit, organized in Bürgenstock, Switzerland at the request of Ukraine, with the participation of Heads of State and Government of more than 90 countries, as well as leaders of the European Union and multilateral organizations.

Foreign Minister Luca Beccari, accompanied by Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation Marcello Beccari and First Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bojana Gruška, took part in an important high-level meeting on Saturday and the inauguration ceremony on Sunday in Switzerland in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The goal of the summit is to develop a common vision for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and to encourage the start of concrete peace negotiations; the summit is also a platform for dialogue and discussion among countries of the world inspired by the principles of the UN Charter and international law.

Secretary of State Beccari participated in the discussions held during the summit, spoke in particular about nuclear safety, reiterated the need to ensure the correct and safe operation of nuclear power plants, and strongly condemned the threat of using nuclear weapons in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Beccari stressed the Republic’s position, intervention measures taken at home and in multilateral forums in favor of countries that are victims of military aggression, and agreed on the need for a peace process achieved through strong international cooperation, including the principle of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries.

At the end of the High-level Summit, a joint statement on the framework for peace was adopted, which was supported by more than 80 countries and international organizations, including San Marino, sending a clear signal to the people of Ukraine and all those directly affected by the consequences of the conflict that progress is underway.

It was also an opportunity for Secretary Beccari to informally discuss the upcoming Association Agreement with the European Union with the President of Croatia, the Prime Minister of Andorra, the Secretary General of the European Commission, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic, the Swiss Confederation, the Principality of Monaco, the Republic of Malta, the Republic of Croatia, and the Principality of Liechtenstein.

“The Republic of San Marino welcomes all international efforts announced by Secretary Beccari, such as this summit, aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in accordance with international law, in particular the Charter of the United Nations, and the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly. This summit is the first important step towards this goal and towards an end to hostilities, which obviously cannot be seen as a capitulation of Ukraine; we reiterate San Marino’s firm support for the Ukrainian and Swiss peace efforts.”
