Xavi Hernandez has been sacked as Barcelona head coach.
The 44-year-old was sacked today following a meeting with Barcelona president John Laporta and sporting director Deco.
Xavi joined Barcelona in the middle of the 2021 season. The following season, Barcelona won the Spanish League title under Xavi’s leadership. However, Barcelona did not win any trophies under his leadership this season.
In January this year, Xavi announced that he would leave the club after the end of the season. However, Barcelona officials have repeatedly asked Xavi to stay in the club, and a month ago he announced that he would stay for another year.
However, Xavi said in a recent press conference that the club’s financial situation does not allow them to sign more players, and fans must accept that the club’s current situation does not allow them to compete with the biggest teams in Europe. This is also the main reason why the club decided to fire Xavi.
Xavi’s final game in charge will be against Sevilla on Sunday evening.
After firing Xavi, Barcelona decided to appoint former Bayern Munich champion Hansi Flick, who won the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League with Bayern.
After his success at Bayern, Flick took over as head coach of the German team. However, his results with the German team were not good. Under his leadership, the German team only won 12 of 25 games. He was fired in September last year for failing to achieve results. He has not taken charge of any team since then.
Robert Lewandowski, who currently plays for Barcelona, played for Bayern under Flick for two seasons.
