Statement from the Secretariat of the Advisory Committee on Drug Abuse
As we prepare for the excitement of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament and Carnival in St. Lucia, the Advisory Committee on the Abuse of Substances Secretariat takes this opportunity to remind everyone of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. During the festive season, it is natural for people to want to relax and have fun. It is even more important to remember that there is life beyond these seasons.
Let us make choices that are good for ourselves, our loved ones, and our fellow human beings. Acting responsibly and BroadCast Unitedligently will help us greatly reduce the likelihood of problems in both the short and long term.
Excessive drinking can lead to a range of negative consequences, including impaired judgement, increased risk of accidents and avoidable injuries, and even alcohol poisoning. It can lead to poor decision-making and, in some cases, very serious harmful effects on the excessive drinker and others.
So, as you celebrate and enjoy, remember to pace yourself, drink water between each alcoholic drink, and make sure not to drink on an empty stomach. Take care of your friends, loved ones, and other festival patrons.
As adults, we must also remember to protect minors and not provide them with alcohol. Never offer or encourage alcohol to children, and never purchase it on behalf of an adult. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol, you should not be afraid or hesitate to seek help.
Let us all do our part to make the upcoming season of joy and celebration safe and enjoyable for everyone. The Department of Health, Wellness and Ageing wishes everyone a wonderful and safe time of celebration!
