The world’s best cross-country mountain bikers competed in World Cup competition on Sunday in Val di Sol, Italy. After Friday’s short-track race, the cross-country race began, and this time the competition was a little less exciting.

During the first full lap, Puck Pieterse, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Loane Lecomte were ahead of the rest of the pack. Lecomte could not sustain that long and dropped out, with Pieterse joining Ferrand-Prevot for a while. However, the Frenchwoman was too big and soon left Pieterse behind, taking an impressive victory all on her own. Pieterse took second place 50 seconds later, with South African Candice Lill soon overtaking Lecomte into third and remaining in good form until her first World Cup podium. Anne Tauber finished 11th and Lotte Koopmans 46th.
Men
A small group emerged in the lead early in the race: Alan Hatherly attacked, followed by South Africans Nino Schurter, Martin Vidaurre and Jordan Sarrou. Two laps later, a group of pursuers joined them, but soon Hatherly, Schurter and Vidaurre were far away from the others again.
Schulte and Hatherley continued, and a little later, the young Chilean Vidor had to slow down going uphill. With more than three laps to go, Hatherley also had to let the Swiss legend ride, and Schulte took an impressive victory, his first since last year’s Val di Sole. Hatherley finished second, with Frenchman Matisse Azzaro winning the sprint third by a suitable distance – without the Dutchman.
