Roseau, Dominica (TDN)
– Hurricane Irma strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 150 mph early Tuesday morning, heading directly for Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Martin and Puerto Rico. Forecasters warned that the storm could strengthen further before making landfall in the Leeward Islands early Wednesday morning. After moving southwest, Hurricane Irma began drifting due west and was located at 16.6 degrees north latitude, 57 degrees west longitude at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, 320 miles east of the Leeward Islands. It was moving at 14 mph. Hurricane Irma is forecast to be directly over Antigua and St. Kitts and Nevis early Wednesday morning. Hurricane Irma is expected to be located at 17.7 degrees north latitude, 61.5 degrees west longitude around 5:00 a.m. Wednesday. Antigua is located at 17.2 degrees north latitude, 61.48 degrees west longitude. The hurricane is expected to continue along a path of destructive damage later Wednesday, directly impacting the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten and Puerto Rico. More troubling is that Hurricane Irma will still be a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph when it makes landfall on those islands.
Meanwhile, residents of the Leeward Islands heeded warnings from authorities and began stockpiling food and water and making plans to weather the impact of the extremely dangerous Hurricane Irma.
