June 10, Kathmandu. A rally was held in Hetaunda to demand the protection of sea turtles. On the occasion of World Turtle Day, Nepal Wildlife Conservation and Research Organization organized a conservation awareness rally in Hetaunda on Thursday.
The students who participated in the rally carried turtle stickers and postcards and held conservation slogans. The rally started from the main gate of the Forestry College and ended at the gate of the Forestry College via Flag Chowk and Buddha Chowk.
World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23 to create awareness about sea turtles and the importance of their conservation. On the same day, Wild Care also conducted an awareness campaign at its District 4 office in Makwanpurgarhi Village.
Sea turtle species are among the most endangered in the world. Researcher Rama Mishra says almost half of all sea turtle species are at risk of extinction in one way or another. “Of the 17 species of sea turtles found in Nepal, a slender tortoise called Thotri is the only one alive and is a critically endangered species,” she said. Their numbers are declining due to meat, poaching and use as pets. decline.
Savin Adhikari, a researcher at the Wildlife Conservation Centre, said that since turtles are late-maturing creatures, overconsumption can have a significant impact on their population. He said that in nature, turtles can lay between four and 100 eggs, but only a few reach the adult stage.
Nepalese law prohibits the breeding, sale and killing of sea turtles.
