Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, speaking at the G7 summit outreach meeting, highlighted the recent Lok Sabha elections and said the “blessings” given to the elections by the Indian people in the form of a historic victory was a “victory for democracy”.
The prime minister also shared figures in his speech to highlight the magnitude of India’s largest democratic movement in the world, which was held in seven phases between April 19 and June 1. Votes were counted on June 4.
Modi was in Italy for the 50th G7 summit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. He spoke on artificial BroadCast Unitedligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean along with other national leaders including Pope Francis.
This is his first trip abroad after being sworn in as India’s prime minister for the third consecutive time after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance won the general election.
“The blessings given by the people of India with this historic victory is a victory for democracy,” Modi said, adding that it was a “victory” for the entire democratic world.
“Just a few days after assuming office, I am extremely happy to be among my friends,” Modi said.
In the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 240 seats, falling short of a majority, while the National Democratic Alliance won 293 seats, securing a majority.
The Congress won 99 seats and the Indian group won 234. After the voting, the two winning independents also pledged their support to the Congress, bringing the Indian group’s total number of seats to 236.
The G7 summit was held in Borgo Egnazia, a luxury resort in Puglia.
“Last week, many of your friends were busy with the European Parliament elections. Some of your friends will be experiencing the excitement of elections in the near future. In India, the election time was also a few months ago,” Modi said, citing some figures to highlight the “special and extensive nature” of Indian elections.
He said: “There were more than 2,600 political parties, more than 1 million polling stations, more than 5 million electronic voting machines, 15 million polling workers and about 970 million voters, of which 640 million exercised their right to vote. Through the ubiquitous application of technology, the election process became fair and transparent.”
“Moreover, the results of such a big election were announced within a few hours!” said the Prime Minister.
In his speech at the conference, Modi said that this was the biggest democratic event in the world and human history.
“It is also a living example of our age-old values as the mother of democracy. Moreover, it is my good fortune that the people of India have allowed me to serve them for the third time in a row. This is the first time such a thing has happened in India in the last six decades,” he asserted.
Modi was sworn in as prime minister for a third term on June 9, matching the feat of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who won elections in 1952, 1957 and 1962.
