LAUSANNE, Switzerland: France has won a medal from the 1900 Paris Olympics that originally belonged to Britain.
The medal was won by Britain’s Lloyd Hildebrand, who competed in both cycling events and finished second in the men’s 25km, but the IOC executive board has re-awarded the medal to France.
“Recent research has concluded that, although Hildebrand was a British citizen, he was born and raised in France and played for French clubs around the 1900 Paris Olympics,” the IOC said in a statement on Thursday.
At the time, athletes were registered under the national federations in which they competed, and national Olympic committees were not yet involved in the process.
The IOC said: “In the official records of the 1900 Paris Olympics and in the IOC database, the medals won by Hildebrand will be credited to France and not to Great Britain.”
Paris will also host this year’s Olympics, which will begin on July 26.
