Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio were never friends.
They did, however, sign a baseball jersey together that is now for sale in London.
“It’s an outstanding piece, and they are two icons of baseball,” said Morris Dalla Costa, a former London sports reporter and columnist who now works for Mackenzie Associates Auctions (MAA).
The MAA is working to verify the authenticity of the piece, which is part of a large collection of autographed, certified sports jerseys that the MAA is auctioning in an online estate sale.
“We’re going to be doing an estate sale here for a couple of weeks and we’re doing it on behalf of a trust,” said Scott McKenzie, an auctioneer and appraiser for MAA. “The man who passed away was a firefighter in Amherstburg, Ont., and he was obviously an avid sports fan. He had a lot of memorabilia.”

“The quality of some of the items blew me away because you can’t see so many in one place,” Dalla Costa said. “The first was a Bobby Orr signed jersey that was authenticated. There was also Bo Jackson — he played two sports — and Dick Butkus, who was one of the best linebackers in Chicago Bears history.”

“It’s a great combination of baseball, football and hockey,” Dalla Costa said. “Some of these guys, like Johnny Ball and Al Kaline, have passed away, so they don’t have any more signed jerseys. All of these jerseys are going to be hard to get.”
The online auction will run until September 16th.
