Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said the “government has become comfortable with mediocrity” and he harshly criticised a series of government failures in recent days and weeks.
Grech spoke on Net TV on Sunday about a series of serious blunders and allegations of corruption within government entities and authorities under the watch of Byron Camilleri.
“Recently, every week has seen a serious scandal involving the Camilleri cabinet.”
Grech said the government did not have the will or the moral strength to change the status quo, adding that a change of government was urgently needed.
He further questioned Byron Camilleri’s silence on the cases and Robert Abela’s reluctance to fire him. “This is a secret government,” he blasted.
Speaking about the upcoming budget, Grech reiterated that the government cannot continue to pursue an economic model based on volume. He claimed that Malta is now in a situation similar to that of the 1970s.
“It doesn’t matter to the government that you’re constantly stuck in traffic jams or that you don’t get the care you need when you go to the hospital…”
Stating that this showed that the government had now become comfortable with mediocrity, Grech said a Nationalist government would focus on quality rather than quantity, noting that Malta’s size could not rely on numbers.
When asked about the KMT Secretary-General Michael Piccinino, Grech described his latest move as a bittersweet moment, noting that while he was happy to see Piccinino run in the next election, he would miss their close working relationship.
Grech also spoke about the Nationalist Party’s campaign titled “‘Il Quddiem” for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
The Nationalist leader said it was good to look back on the 60th anniversary of Malta’s independence, but it was more important to look to the future and acknowledge the need to “get rid of criminals in the Cabinet”.
Labour says Grech was only ordered to attack cabinet
In a statement released late on Sunday, the Labor Party said Gretsch was “known for cheap politics”, called the Nationals leader a “professional evader” and slammed his The illegal behavior of the parties.
PL said Grech’s attack on the cabinet on Sunday morning was nothing more than orders.
