The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Education, has formally asked Professor Y. Sudarshan Rao, former professor of history and dean of the School of Social Sciences at Kakatiya University, Warangal, to reconsider its decision to reject the Gurukul Fellowship.
In a letter to Prof. Rao, ICHR Member Secretary Om Jee Upadhyay highlighted the resolution adopted unanimously by the Council at its meeting on March 27, urging Prof. Rao to accept the scholarship. The Gurukul Scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards of ICHR and was given to Prof. Rao in recognition of his profound scholarship and tireless contribution to history.
Professor Rao had previously declined to accept the scholarship, citing confusion as to whether the former ICHR President was eligible for the award. However, the Council stressed that the scholarship was awarded on the basis of Professor Rao’s merits and the significant impact he has had on historical research. The letter highlights the potential benefits of Professor Rao’s continued engagement and expertise to the academic community and future generations.
Upadhyay said: “We believe that your acceptance of this scholarship will greatly benefit future generations and the academic community as a whole.” The Board hopes that Professor Rao will reconsider his previous decision and accept the scholarship as a sign of respect.
