The French newspaper Le Monde wrote that the Russian volunteer army “Medved” (Bear) mercenaries left Burkina Faso, Africa, pointing out that the reason for the Russian mercenaries’ departure from Africa was their transfer to the Kursk region. The Ukrainian army’s attack has continued since August 6.
“This is a military group of about a hundred people that arrived in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, in May with the aim of taking over the protection of “certain important figures, which could include the head of the military junta, Captain Ibrahim Traoré”, writes the French newspaper.
On August 22, Le Monde reporters contacted the brigade commander Viktor Yermalayev, nicknamed “Peerless”, via Telegram, and confirmed the news of Medvedi’s departure from Burkina Faso.

He declined to specify his mission but confirmed the initial deployment of 300 troops. “Of course, some will stay. We have bases, assets, equipment and ammunition. We are not going to take everything back to Russia.”
According to various estimates confirmed to AFP by an unnamed Western security source, around 100 mercenaries from the Medvedi Brigade out of a total contingent of 300 have left Burkina Faso.
In June, Jack Margolin, an expert on Russian mercenaries at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), described the Bear as an organization “controlled by the Department of Defense” with links to military units that have supplied the Wagner mercenary organization since 2014.
The Russian pro-war website “Tsargrad” previously wrote that “Medvedi’s 81st Independent Special Brigade returned to Kursk, Russia from Africa to defend the motherland.”
On August 27, a message appeared on Medvedi’s Telegram channel saying that “due to recent events” the brigade would return to its base in annexed Crimea.
