In 2023, 14% of immigrants living in France were born in Asia. With 1 million immigrants, Asia is the third largest source of immigrants after Africa and Europe. 39% of immigrants born in Asia were born in Turkey or Southeast Asia, compared to 75% in 1968; the number of immigrants from other parts of Asia, especially China and South Asia, has been increasing since the 1980s.

While the main reason for Asian-born immigrants to come to France is family, a quarter mentioned that one of the reasons they immigrated to France was insecurity in their country of origin: half of those born in the Middle East mentioned this. An increasing number of Asian immigrants are coming to France to study, especially those from China, where almost half of them cite this as a reason.

Asian immigrants have the lowest level of French proficiency when they arrive in France of all immigrants: six in ten do not know French at all. Their French proficiency improves as they stay longer in France, study in France or have a spouse born in France. However, in 2019-2020, 26% of Asian immigrants whose mother tongue or reference language is not French still reported difficulties in asking for information or seeking services in French.
