Muscat: The temperature in Salalah governorate in Dhofar was 30.8 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees Celsius above the monthly average, followed by Masirah governorate at 31.3 degrees Celsius (+0.9 degrees Celsius) and Tumlet governorate at 31.3 degrees Celsius (+0.4 degrees Celsius).

Meanwhile, Dalkut district in the governorate reported 72.2 mm of rainfall, followed by the port of Salalah (52.2 mm) and Wadi Bani Khalid (52.2 mm).

The temperature in the Barka region was 47.9 degrees Celsius, one of the highest ever recorded in May, while the temperature in the Jebel Shams region was 18.9 degrees Celsius, one of the lowest ever recorded in the same period.

Meanwhile, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported that May 2024 was the warmest May on record, marking the 12th consecutive month that the global average temperature reached the highest value for the corresponding month.

With the release of two new reports detailing the impact of climate change, the UN Secretary-General cited C3S data in calling for urgent action.

The global average temperature in May 2024 was 0.65°C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.52°C above the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900, making it the 11th consecutive month (since July 2023) that the global average temperature reached or exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

According to C3S data, the global average temperature in the past 12 months (June 2023 to May 2024) has set a new record high, 0.75°C higher than the average temperature from 1991 to 2020 and 1.63°C higher than the pre-industrial average temperature from 1850 to 1900.
