The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday reported that weekly inflation measured by the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) for the week ended August 22 showed a decline of 0.10 percent in the composite consumer group.
According to PBS data, the SPI index of the above group was 321.72 points that week, compared with 322.03 points last week.
Compared with the same period last year, the comprehensive consumer group SPI rose by 16.69% this week.
The weekly SPI = 100 with the base year 2015-16 covers 51 necessities across 17 urban centres and all expenditure categories.
Similarly, the SPI for the lowest consumer group (up to Rs 17,732) also declined by 0.24% to 310.29 points from 311.04 points last week.
The SPI of the groups with consumption levels of Rs 17,732-22,888, Rs 22,889-29,517, Rs 29,518-44,175 and above Rs 44,175 declined by 0.22%, 0.15%, 0.12% and 0.05% respectively.
This week, among 51 commodities, the prices of 21 commodities (41.18%) increased, the prices of 9 commodities (17.64%) decreased, and the prices of 21 commodities (41.18%) remained unchanged.
Commodities with the largest average price drops compared to last week include tomatoes (21.96%), flour (2.77%), bananas (2.08%), onions (1.70%), sugar (1.43%), chicken (1.25%), pulses (1.00%) and bread (0.61%).
The commodities which recorded a sharp increase in their average weekly prices included eggs (6.10%), pulses (6.05%), potatoes (2.41%), cooked pulses (0.89%), cooked beef (0.74%), mustard oil (0.63%), beef (0.47%), shirts (0.43%), fresh milk (0.39%) and LPG (0.16%).
The commodities which saw a decrease in prices compared to the same period last year include wheat flour (36.12%), chilli powder (17.78%), first quarter electricity bill (16.91%), 5 litre cooking oil (10.50%), petrol (10.07%), sugar (9.62%), diesel (9.22%), broken basmati rice (8.88%), 2.5 kg vegetable ghee (7.63%), 1 kg vegetable ghee (6.51%) and mustard oil (4.00%).
The commodities which saw an increase in average prices in the first quarter compared to the same period last year include gas bill (570.00%), onion (79.51%), pulses (51.34%), tomatoes (28.10%), milk powder (26.14%), sandalwood (25.01%), beef (23.89%), pulses and mung beans (23.88%), shirting material (23.61%), garlic (22.84%), salt powder (21.36%) and georgette (15.18%).
