A day after the National Congress (NC) and Congress forged a pre-election alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said consensus on some seats is yet to be finalised. While supporting the alliance in the upcoming assembly elections, NCP vice-president Omar Abdullah also mentioned that while the allotment of most of the 90 assembly seats has been agreed upon, a few are yet to be finalised.
Abdullah’s statement came after Nepali Congress President Dr Farooq Abdullah announced an alliance aimed at strengthening their electoral strategy against the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. Omar Abdullah, who accompanied party leader Sakina Ittu to Norabad in Kulgam to file nomination papers, confirmed to reporters at Norabad that most seats have been agreed but negotiations for some disputed areas are still ongoing.
“While we have secured majority of seats, the two sides are still deadlocked in some areas. However, we will hold another meeting today to resolve these issues and secure the remaining seats,” he said.
Abdullah also revealed that the National Congress plans to release the list of candidates by August 27, highlighting the party’s proactive attitude to connect with voters. He added: “We have prepared a manifesto and hope that the people will elect us to serve them and continue to serve them for the next five years.”
The alliance between the Nepali Congress and the Indian National Congress is seen as a strategic move to consolidate opposition votes ahead of parliamentary elections, reflecting a united front in the face of political challenges in the region. With the two parties set to finalize their seat allocation soon, all eyes will be on the seats that have yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, various political leaders have started filing their nomination papers for the first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from NC leader Sakina Ittu, PDP leader Dr Mehboo Baig has also filed his nomination papers in Anantnag in South Kashmir.
In the first phase of the elections, 24 constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir will go to polls on September 18, including 16 in the Kashmir Valley and eight in the Jammu region.
