Yesterday, a meeting of the Syriza Political Secretariat on the party’s media reorganization plan was held in a tense atmosphere (“dawn” and “red”).
According to Koumoundouros sources, at the urging of Syriza President Stefanos Katselakis to provide financial support to members of the Political Secretariat so that party media workers can be paid, so far they have been willing and lent them, in addition to the President himself, Reina Duroux, Nikos Pappas, Theodora Chakri, Olympia Trigioridou, Panos Rigas, Nikos Skorinis, Marilisa Shenogianakopoulou and Panagiota Allapi-Belloni, according to their abilities, to pay part of the accrued salaries of party media workers.
In a statement from the Political Secretariat yesterday, SYRIZA said: “SYRIZA-PS will do its utmost to rebuild and strengthen its media so that the voice of society is heard loudly through the media. In response to this difficult economic situation, the boards of directors of the two media outlets, Avgi and Kokkinos, as well as SYRIZA-PS, will do their utmost to find resources and financing to serve the media restructuring and streamlining plan, which also includes a voluntary program for workers”.
Full announcement:
The recent catastrophic fires in Attica, which even threatened the urban fabric of Chalandrio, are the result of criminal choices and inadequacies of the Mitsotakis government in preventing and dealing with forest fires.
No matter how many communication skills Mr. Mitsotakis uses, no matter how he tries to shift the blame elsewhere, from the climate crisis to the inhabitants themselves who did not clean up the land, the truth is not hidden. During the ND, the burned area has tripled since 2019, and our country ranks first in the EU in the ratio of burned area to the number of fires.
Meanwhile, Mitsotakis’ government has not absorbed the necessary funds from the Civil Protection Recovery Fund. He has stubbornly refused to hire the necessary staff in the fire service. It has weakened the Forest Service, for which the recruitment of seasonal staff this year was completed only a few weeks ago.
After the disaster, the announcements made by the Prime Minister, who has been missing for many days, will also remain on paper, as he did in previous years. Announcements that repeat proposals and measures that the Syriza government had already submitted and started to implement, including the Goldamer Conclusions (2019), the Public Fire Policy (2019) and the National Forest Strategy (2018). These were sacrificed on the altar of petty political interests and the doctrine of privatization of public services.
The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA-PS) has developed a comprehensive plan for the effective prevention and handling of forest fires. Among other things, it provides for the staffing of fire brigades, the creation of a special unit of forest firefighters, the purchase of new firefighting vehicles, and the use of old combat-capable but retired vehicles of the armed forces.
At the same time, the Radical Left Coalition-PS will immediately submit a legal proposal for the establishment of an independent national civil protection agency with legal, financial and administrative autonomy. The commander and deputy commander of this independent agency will be selected not according to party criteria, but after hearings held by the parliamentary institutions and transparency committees and with the consent of an independent expert committee. The new independent agency will have contact persons and coordinators in each region, as well as expert scientists who will issue warnings when danger occurs.
Central to Syriza’s politics and values is protecting the environment and addressing the consequences of the climate crisis, the great challenge of our time.
But at the same time, it will also investigate the specific responsibilities, actions and omissions of all those involved in dealing with the recent disaster in Attica, as well as the exact number of air and ground forces that were deployed to deal with it. Because citizens have the right to know the truth.
· In these critical moments, it is more necessary than ever to strengthen Syriza, both inside and outside the Parliament, in order to pave the way for the overthrow of the Mitsotakis government as soon as possible and for the great progressive changes that the country needs. It goes without saying that the presence of the party’s president in the Greek Parliament will strengthen the voice of Syriza -PS and will make a decisive contribution to the party’s great opposition efforts.
· Syriza did not have, and does not have, invisible financiers and “sponsors”. It relies on government funding and contributions from its members, executives and MPs. The financial difficulties it faces after the reduction of state funding also have an impact on the financing of the party media, which is not only very important for Syriza, but also for the quality of information provided to citizens, which is affected every day.
Syriza will do its utmost to rebuild and strengthen its media, so that the voice of society can be heard loudly through the media. In response to this difficult economic situation, the boards of the two media outlets Avgi and Kokkinos, as well as SYRIZA-PS, will do their utmost to find resources and financing to serve a media restructuring and streamlining program, which will also include a voluntary program for employees.
· The Syriza Party – PS will, in accordance with the TIF, present socially just and concrete proposals on all the major issues of concern to citizens, from accuracy and housing to public health, which is crumbling every day. He will fight inside and outside Parliament to make the hopes and dreams of Greek citizens for a better life come true as soon as possible.
