Residents of Hammab district in Jowzjan province said their roads connecting Hammab district with Sheberghan and Mazar-i-Sharif were destroyed by seasonal flooding along the coast of the Sea of Omu.
They complained that they were forced to raise funds out of their own pocket to build the 20-kilometer road due to what they described as negligence by the Taliban government.
Abdul Majid Saadat, a resident of the Qamab area, told Radio Azadi that although the people of Qamab are very poor, they are forced to make their own decisions and take action:
“During the flood season, our road was closed for five to six months. Commuting was very difficult. So people agreed to raise five million Afghans to build the road.”
Ara Bodi, a resident of the Hammab district center, also complained that the road construction costs have to be paid out of the pockets of the poor, which is very difficult.
He told Radio Free Afghanistan that people had no bread to eat but were forced to build roads:
“People raised funds themselves and built the road and now we are asking the government to work with us to complete the rest of the work like paving and asphalt.”
The people of Kamab had to use their own money to rebuild the destroyed roads
On the other hand, Isa Ghol, another resident of Kamab, said that before the road was built, many babies and sick people died due to the deteriorating road and severe heat and cold conditions:
“Patients and babies are dying on the way and we are very worried. We are requesting the government to pave this road for us.”
Residents of Kamab said seasonal flooding in Amuhai not only destroyed people’s houses but also damaged farmlands and roads.
They requested the Taliban government to help the people of Qamab to prevent the destruction of the Amu Darya River and to build roads.
People living along the Yay Am coast say that the continuous flooding in the Am Hai has caused economic losses and sometimes loss of life.
Meanwhile, the Jazjan Ulema Council said it would convey the challenges and demands of the people of Qamab to the central authorities.
Residents of the Hammab and Qarqin regions have reportedly been complaining about frequent flooding for years and asking for reinforcements from the seaside.
But neither the previous nor the current government has paid serious attention to this issue.
Amu Darya is a border region shared with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
