Swimming is an important skill in the Land of a Thousand Lakes, but not everyone learns to swim during childhood. What is it like to learn to swim as an adult?

For many Finns, swimming is an important summer activity, but what would life be like without the ability to swim? This week’s podcast explores the prejudices people have about swimming skills, with an interview with Yle News reporter Priya Ramachandran D’Souza What she found ask The Lifeguards Federation discusses this topic.

“They told me they knew a lot of people who couldn’t swim but were too afraid to tell their spouses or friends, so they would cover it up,” De Sousa said.

The problem is getting worse, with only 55% of sixth graders now able to swim, down from 76% in 2016. The pandemic is partly to blame, with disrupted swimming lesson schedules not helping learners, but for those who didn’t learn to swim as children, what will it be like as adults?

Learning to swim as an adult: Is it still taboo?

There are big barriers to learning and phobias to overcome, but once people finally “get it,” the rewards are huge.

“When I learned to float, I cried because first of all, I overcame my fear of water,” Nelia Kajiriand only started learning to swim as an adult. “I overcame all the fears that prevented me from swimming. It was an unforgettable experience. I remember yelling and crying a lot.”

Swimming Coach Andrew Harrison says there are some techniques that can help people overcome worry.

“The most important thing is learning how to put your face in the water and blow bubbles,” Harrison said. “So I think a good pair of goggles is really important. Cheap goggles are a nightmare. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but you have to have good enough goggles. And also learning how to exhale and relax underwater, because you can be calm in the water for 10 or 20 seconds, but your natural reaction, your instinct, tends to overcome that, and then you start hyperventilating.”
