The new integrated passenger terminal at Tiruchirapalli International Airport became operational on Tuesday, the Airports Authority of India announced.
CHENNAI — The airport paid tribute to the Tiruchi Indigo flight which landed here at around 6:35 am, becoming the first aircraft to be screened at the swanky terminal. The first overseas flight to be screened at the new terminal was the one from Singapore which landed here at around 7:20 am.
Officials of the Airport Authority of India, led by Tiruchi Airport Director P. Subramani, warmly welcomed the passengers arriving from Chennai and Singapore in the morning at the new terminal. Mr. Subramani said the passengers were very happy with the luxurious building equipped with a host of facilities and other infrastructure.
Mr. Subramani said all stakeholders including Customs, Immigration, Central Industrial Security Force and airlines have shifted to the new building and started work from there.
He added that the Airports Authority of India’s New Delhi headquarters has commissioned a consultancy firm to study the possible use of the existing terminal building once the new complex is commissioned.
The non-metropolitan Tiruchirapalli International Airport receives more overseas passengers than domestic ones, with direct international flights to Colombo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Sharjah and Doha. In the 2023-2024 fiscal, the airport received more than 1.3 million international passengers, making it the second largest airport in Tamil Nadu after Chennai in terms of overseas passengers.
