The University of the Republic of San Marino, leader of a project involving young people, institutions and citizens in the path of education, recently presented the prototype of “Bartolo: Mobile Chair”, a system of seats at the headquarters of the City of Pesaro that can be arranged in multiple arrangements, with different shapes and functions, thus transforming the space in which they are located. Through a shared and in-depth process that led to its creation, it has been designed to be used for temporary events both indoors and outdoors as part of the “Pesaro 2024 – Italian Capital of Culture” campaign. It takes its name from the San Bartolo Natural Park, an integral part of the territory and identity of Pesaro.
The system is modular, foldable and transportable, and can adapt to different types of terrain and accommodate three or more people as needed. It is expected to use local materials such as beech and chestnut wood, as well as natural fabrics.
Beyond the technical features, a systematic design and production process emerged, in which sensitivities and knowledge in the field were analyzed and developed in the name of sharing and in-depth analysis.
In this framework, some academics from the Community Design Research Unit of the University of San Marino, coordinated by the Scientific Director Riccardo Varini, organized a workshop for two classes of the Bramante Genga Technical and Economic School in Pesaro, dedicated to the creation of foldable and transportable objects.
“This meeting opens, transforms and builds relationships, just as the capital of the Marche region does as Italian Capital of Culture,” explains Giorgio Dall’Osso, one of the researchers involved in the study. “Environment, culture and society are at the heart of a project characterized by dialogue, whose fundamental idea is to achieve a true territorial research process. The context is one of joint work and sharing, linking different realities of the same territory in a process of design and customization,” he reiterated, describing the system launched last July 10.
Stimulated by this initiative, the Community Design Research Unit is simultaneously focusing on a second project focused on play and dedicated to children. Artisans, nature guides and academics from the Pesaro area are involved, among them 38 students from the Design Degree Program of the University of San Marino. “Through analysis and interviews, the concept of an object was born that allows children to play through creative collaboration in the management and configuration of public spaces”, points out Dall’Osso. “The first opportunity to test this product will be represented by the “White Midnight for Children” event scheduled for September 2nd and 3rd in Pesaro, offering it to very young people and their families. As for the adult session, an exhibition has been announced in which all the processes involved will be illustrated, which are currently being defined”.
