I have more praise than criticism for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s (LW) National Day Rally.
He discussed a number of issues, including an additional 10 weeks of shared leave for newborns, up to $6,000 for six months for people who are involuntarily unemployed, and changes to the elementary school gifted program.
In this review, I will touch upon 3 issues.
Workers’ Party MP Louis Chua had unsuccessfully called on the PAP government to adopt shared parental leave back in April 2022. Fast forward to last night, LW announced almost the same additional 10 weeks of shared leave for newborns, with a few minor changes and twists here and there.
Those who understand our country’s political discourse will know about the above, but those who only know how to listen to bullshit propaganda and only listen to the “right things”, such as my friend Mr. Liang, will not care and will definitely not know. He lives in a fantasy world.
Secondly, $6,000 is available to those who are forced to work.
Although Xu Shunquan is not a member of Congress, as early as 2016, he also stated that if elected, he would promote unemployment insurance for our workers.
Again, last night, the LW announced that the involuntarily unemployed can get up to $6,000 over 6 months, again twisting Chee’s suggestion a bit and calling it pap’s.
The original suggestions for the two options above came from the opposition, and I’m disappointed that the LW didn’t at least acknowledge and thank them for their opinions and ideas, which his government adopted years later and called theirs.
Expressing gratitude or making simple gestures of recognition does not make anyone look small, lesser, or stupid.
I think stronger, more confident people would do that.
Last but not least is our cost of living issue and challenge. There was no mention of how to address our cost of living challenge. It is real, it is bothering people, it is hurting people.
Giving people vouchers and a few hundred dollars here and there is at best a piecemeal patchwork effort. Sure, they help to a certain extent, but it is only short-term, temporary, and over time they may breed a mentality of weakness, patronage, and handouts among our citizens.
This generation of PAP leaders must not only know how to reward themselves handsomely, but also go for the low-hanging fruit only.
